Server Structure & Channel Management

Chapter 13 — Channel categories, threads, announcements, and keeping the server tidy.

A well-organized Discord server reduces confusion, cuts down on repeated support questions, and makes staff work easier. You aren't expected to redesign the server structure, but you should understand the logic behind it and help keep it tidy.

Categories & Channels

  • Information — rules, announcements, FAQs; read-only for regular members.
  • Community — general chat, media sharing, suggestions.
  • Game-Specific — trading, market, help/support related to Federal SMP itself.
  • Voice — general and game voice channels, often with auto-generated temporary channels for group calls.
  • Staff-Only — internal logs, discussion, and coordination, invisible to regular members.

Threads

Threads keep long or niche discussions out of the main channel flow. Encourage members to use them for detailed troubleshooting or build showcases rather than letting a single topic dominate general chat for hours.

Announcement Channels

Reserved for official updates from staff — patch notes, events, downtime notices. Regular members typically cannot post directly; if a member has a suggestion for an announcement, route it to the appropriate Admin.

Keeping Things Tidy

  • Archive or lock outdated threads periodically.
  • Flag channels that have drifted from their intended purpose (e.g. off-topic spam in a support channel) to an Admin for review.
  • Keep pinned messages current — remove pins that are no longer relevant.

Quick Review — Q&A

Q: Where should long or niche discussions be moved to avoid cluttering general chat?

A: Threads.

Q: Who is typically able to post in announcement channels?

A: Staff only — regular members cannot post directly and should route suggestions through an Admin.

Q: What should you do if you notice a channel has drifted from its intended purpose?

A: Flag it to an Admin for review rather than unilaterally changing its settings.
