Discord Moderation Toolbox
Chapter 9 — Know what our moderation bot does, what it does not do, and how to avoid duplicating work.
Our Discord server relies on a single moderation bot to automate moderation so staff are not manually tracking everything by hand. Knowing what it does — and, just as importantly, what it does not do — keeps the server organized and keeps you from missing work.
Dyno (Dyno#3861)
Dyno is the main and only moderation bot on this server. It handles all automated moderation, logging, and utility commands.
- Moderation commands —
?mute,?kick,?ban,?warn,?unmute,?unban— each logged automatically to the mod-log channel. - Auto-moderation — word filters, spam detection, mass mention blocking, and invite link filtering run around the clock without staff intervention.
- Logging — message edits/deletes, join/leaves, and role changes are recorded to the mod-log channel for staff review.
- Custom commands — server-specific commands like
!rulesand!appealthat answer common questions automatically. - Reaction roles — self-assignable roles through reactions on a designated message.
ALWAYS SPECIFY A REASON
Every ?ban or ?mute command must include a reason. Never run a bare command like ?ban @user — always add the reason so the mod-log entry is useful during appeals.
Correct: ?ban @user Hate speech in general chat
Incorrect: ?ban @user
General Bot Etiquette
- Always use Dyno's command for an action (mute/kick/ban) rather than a manual server setting, so the action is logged automatically.
- Check the mod-log channel after any action to confirm it went through and logged correctly.
- If Dyno goes down or a command fails, note it in the staff channel — do not silently switch to manual actions without telling the team, since manual actions will not be logged the same way.
GOLDEN RULE
If Dyno can do it, let Dyno do it. Manual moderation (deleting messages by hand, manually timing out members through Discord's native tools) skips the automatic paper trail that protects you during an appeal.
Quick Review — Q&A
Q: What is the only moderation bot on this server?
A: Dyno (Dyno#3861). It handles all moderation commands, auto-moderation, logging, custom commands, and reaction roles.
Q: Why should staff prefer Dyno commands over manual Discord moderation tools?
A: Dyno commands are automatically logged, creating a paper trail. Manual actions may not be logged the same way, weakening evidence for later review or appeals.
Q: What must you always include when running ?ban or ?mute?
A: A reason. For example, ?ban @user Hate speech in general chat. A bare ?ban @user leaves the mod-log entry without context, which hurts you during appeals.
Q: What should you check after issuing a moderation action through Dyno?
A: The mod-log channel, to confirm the action was recorded correctly.
Q: What should you do if Dyno goes down?
A: Tell the staff team immediately in the staff channel rather than silently switching to manual actions. Manual actions skip the automatic logging that Dyno provides.
